Markha Valley Trek Itinerary

Detailed Tour Plan

Leh -Chilling Skiu

  • Altitude: 11,560 ft – 10,490 ft – 11,160 ft
  • Distance: 60 km drive
  • 7 km trek Duration: 2 hours drive
  •  2–3 hours trek
After spending time acclimatizing in Leh, the adventure towards Markha Valley begins. The drive to Chilling takes you through stunning Ladakhi landscapes with winding mountain roads, deep gorges, and breathtaking views of the Zanskar River. Chilling is the last road-accessible village and the starting point of the trek. Here, the Markha River meets the Zanskar River. Trekkers cross the Zanskar River using a traditional trolley bridge or a newly built footbridge. This exciting crossing marks the beginning of your trekking journey. The trail begins with a short but steep climb for about 30 minutes. Once you reach the top, the path becomes easier and gradually follows the river valley. After trekking around 3 km, you reach Kaya, a small settlement with a few homestays. Continuing for another 3 km, you arrive at Skiu, a charming village surrounded by dramatic cliffs and apricot trees. Skiu offers comfortable homestays and campsites, making it an ideal place to rest for the night.

Skiu – Markha

  • Altitude: 11,160 ft – 12,370 ft
  • Distance: 20 km
  • Duration: 6–7 hours
This is the longest trekking day but also one of the most scenic. The trail follows the beautiful Markha River valley, passing through patches of greenery, willow trees, and small barley fields. Along the way, trekkers must cross the chilly waters of the Markha River several times. These crossings add a thrilling element to the trek, so waterproof sandals are highly recommended. The route gradually climbs through rocky terrain before reaching Narding and later the campsite at Sara. Further ahead lies Chalak, a picturesque Ladakhi village known for its stone houses and terraced barley fields. After crossing another section of the river, the trail finally leads to Markha, the largest settlement in the valley. The village has several homestays and a small monastery where trekkers can experience authentic Ladakhi culture.

Markha – Hankar

  • Altitude: 12,370 ft – 13,100 ft
  • Distance: 11 km
  •  Duration: 4–5 hours
Leaving Markha village behind, the trek gradually enters the upper section of the valley where the scenery becomes even more dramatic. The trail follows the Markha River with a gentle climb. Along the way, you will encounter a few river crossings and wooden bridges. After a couple of hours, you reach Umlung, a small settlement with an old monastery. From here, trekkers get their first clear view of the magnificent Kang Yatse peak rising high above the valley. The final stretch leads to Hankar, a beautiful village surrounded by unique rock formations and towering mountains. Overnight stay is usually arranged in local homestays.

Hankar – Nimaling

  • Altitude: 13,100 ft – 15,400 ft
  • Distance: 10 km
  • Duration: 5–6 hours
Today’s trek takes you through some of the most stunning alpine landscapes in Ladakh. After leaving Hankar, the trail gradually climbs towards Thochungtse, a scenic meadow where yaks graze peacefully during summer. The trail then splits one route leads to the Kang Yatse Base Camp, while the other continues towards Nimaling. The path becomes steeper but offers spectacular views of the surrounding mountains. Along the way, trekkers pass a beautiful alpine pond with Kang Yatse towering in the background. Soon after, the landscape opens into the vast green meadow of Nimaling, located at 15,400 ft. This high altitude campsite is surrounded by towering peaks and is often dotted with colorful prayer flags and grazing livestock.

Nimaling – Kongmaru La – Chokdo

  • Altitude: 15,400 ft – 17,060 ft – 12,810 ft
  • Distance: 12 km
  • Duration: 5–6 hours
This is the most challenging yet rewarding day of the trek. The day begins with a steep climb towards Kongmaru La, the highest point of the trek. The ascent takes around two hours but rewards trekkers with breathtaking panoramic views of the surrounding mountain ranges. From the top, you can see the Indus Valley, the Ladakh ranges, and the towering Kang Yatse peak. The descent from Kongmaru La is steep and rocky as the trail enters a narrow canyon with colorful rock formations. After descending for a couple of hours, trekkers reach Sukarmo, where small teahouses offer refreshments. The trail then continues downhill to Chokdo, where trekkers stay overnight in local homestays.

Chokdo – Shang Sumdo – Leh

  • Altitude: 12,810 ft – 12,140 ft – 11,560 ft
  • Distance: 5 km trek | 50 km drive
  • Duration: 2 hours trek
2 hours drive The final day of the trek is relatively easy. The trail follows a gentle route along the river valley until you reach Shang Sumdo, the road head where the trek officially ends. From Shang Sumdo, a short drive takes you back to Leh. On the way, trekkers can also visit the famous Hemis Monastery, one of the largest and most important monasteries in Ladakh.
